Most meal replacement shakes fiber counts land at about 5 grams per serving, and the twist is that the bottle with “Fiber” printed on its label scored near the bottom. Ensure Original Nutrition Shake with Fiber gives 3 grams, alongside 21 grams of added sugar.
We checked nine shakes and powders in USDA FoodData Central to see which ones can stand in for a real meal, and which ones need help from a piece of fruit.
Meal replacement shakes fiber counts, side by side
All figures come from the labels companies submitted to USDA between 2021 and 2022. Powder calories don’t include the milk or water you mix them with.
| Shake (one serving) | Calories | Fiber (% DV) | Protein | Sugar | Sodium |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Garden of Life Organic Meal Shake powder (36.5 g scoop) | 120 | 8 g (29%) | 20 g | 1 g | 150 mg |
| Slimfast Original, Vanilla Cream (325 ml) | 180 | 5 g (17%) | 20 g | 1 g | 180 mg |
| Equate Chocolate Meal Replacement Shake (325 ml) | 160 | 5 g (17%) | 15 g | 1 g | 200 mg |
| Kate Farms Meal Replacement Shake, Vanilla (325 ml) | 290 | 5 g (17%) | 16 g | 18 g | 120 mg |
| Proganics Vanilla Keto powder (50 g) | 270 | 5 g (18%) | 15 g | 2 g | 135 mg |
| Soylent Original Ready to Drink (414 ml) | 400 | 3 g (11%) | 20 g | under 1 g | 300 mg |
| Ensure Original with Fiber, Milk Chocolate (237 ml) | 250 | 3 g (11%) | 9 g | 22 g | 210 mg |
| Naturade Meal Replacement Protein Shake, Chocolate (36 g packet) | 130 | 2 g (7%) | 13 g | 8 g | 230 mg |
| Ensure Original Nutrition Shake, Vanilla (240 ml) | 220 | under 1 g | 9 g | 15 g | 200 mg |
The FDA’s Daily Value for fiber is 28 grams. Spread over three meals, that works out to roughly 9 grams per meal, and only Garden of Life comes close on its own.
A product with 20% DV or more per serving counts as high in fiber. Garden of Life is the only one of the nine that clears that line.
Why fiber matters more in a meal substitute
A shake that replaces lunch has to keep you going until dinner. Mayo Clinic dietitian Anya Guy points out that a good amount of fiber helps you feel fuller longer.
That makes fiber one of the most useful numbers on the label of any meal substitute. Protein gets the headlines, but most of these shakes already deliver 15 to 20 grams of it.
Guy also suggests skipping the packaging claims, reading the Nutrition Facts panel, and looking for whole food ingredients such as nuts, seeds or whole grains. Garden of Life, with chia and flax meal in its fiber blend, fits that advice best.
What each shake brings to the table
Garden of Life Organic Meal Shake
One scoop delivers 8 grams of fiber and 20 grams of protein for 120 calories before you add liquid. The fiber blend combines organic tapioca fiber, chia seed and flax meal, and a sprouted grain and legume protein blend backs it up.
Good fit for: the most fiber per serving in our group. Keep in mind: it’s a powder, so you need a shaker or blender, and erythritol and stevia do the sweetening.
Slimfast Original and Equate
These two ready to drink bottles look alike on paper, with 5 grams of fiber, 1 gram of sugar and 160 to 180 calories. Slimfast uses cellulose gel and Equate uses soluble corn fiber.
Slimfast edges ahead on protein, 20 grams against 15. Equate carries more saturated fat at 2.5 grams.
Kate Farms Vanilla
This plant based shake gives 5 grams of fiber from inulin, chia and quinoa flour, with pea and rice protein. It has the lowest sodium in our group at 120 mg.
Keep in mind: 290 calories and 18 grams of sugar, with brown rice syrup solids and agave syrup on the ingredient list.
Proganics Vanilla Keto
Proganics reaches 5 grams of fiber with organic guar gum and adds 15 grams of fermented pea protein. Coconut milk powder and MCT powder supply most of its 270 calories.
Soylent, Naturade and Ensure
Soylent Original is a large 400 calorie bottle with 20 grams of protein but just 3 grams of fiber, about 0.75 grams per 100 calories. Naturade lists chicory fiber and guar gum but stops at 2 grams, with cane sugar as its second ingredient.
Ensure Original Vanilla gives under 1 gram of fiber. It’s sold as a nutrition shake rather than a meal replacement, which helps explain the gap.

Fiber per 100 calories, shake by shake
Bottle sizes run from 237 to 414 ml, so it helps to look at fiber against calories:
- Garden of Life: about 6.7 grams per 100 calories
- Equate Chocolate: about 3.1 grams
- Slimfast Vanilla Cream: about 2.8 grams
- Proganics Vanilla Keto: about 1.9 grams
- Kate Farms Vanilla: about 1.7 grams
- Naturade Chocolate: about 1.5 grams
- Ensure with Fiber: about 1.2 grams
- Soylent Original: about 0.75 grams
- Ensure Original Vanilla: under 0.5 grams
Garden of Life gives more than twice the fiber per calorie of any other shake here. Soylent and Kate Farms rank lower than their fiber grams suggest because their bottles carry 290 to 400 calories.
Powder or ready to drink?
Ready to drink bottles win on convenience, and their label numbers are exactly what you drink. Powders depend on what you pour in.
Mixed with water, a powder stays at its label calories. Mixed with milk, it gains protein and calories, but milk adds no fiber, so the fiber line stays the same.
Powders also let you blend in your own fiber. A spoonful of nut butter or a handful of oats turns a scoop into something closer to a full breakfast.
Two label myths, checked
Myth: A shake labeled “with Fiber” must be a high fiber choice. Fact: Ensure Original with Fiber gives 3 grams, just 11% DV, and its 21 grams of added sugar cover 42% of the Daily Value.
Myth: A keto shake is automatically the lean option. Fact: Proganics Vanilla Keto carries 19 grams of saturated fat per serving, 95% of the Daily Value, with coconut milk powder and MCT powder leading its ingredient list.
Do weight loss shakes actually work?
The research is fairly supportive. A 2019 review in Obesity Reviews pooled 23 randomized trials with 7,884 adults who had overweight or obesity.
After one year, people on meal replacement diets lost about 1.44 kg more than those on other diets. When the meal replacement plan came with enhanced support, the gap grew to about 6.1 kg.
The authors concluded that meal replacement programs are a valid option for weight management. Note that these were structured programs, not a shake grabbed at random.
Mayo’s Anya Guy adds that not every meal should be replaced. She also cautions that these products shouldn’t take the place of whole foods, especially fruits and vegetables.
Closing the fiber gap for balanced nutrition
A 5 gram shake leaves about 4 grams short of a meal’s share. USDA data shows small whole food sides close that gap fast:
| Shake plus side | Fiber | Calories |
|---|---|---|
| Slimfast Vanilla Cream + medium apple with skin (182 g) | 9.4 g | 275 |
| Equate Chocolate + 1 oz almonds | 8.5 g | 324 |
| Garden of Life scoop + medium apple | 12.4 g | 215 plus liquid |
| Ensure Original Vanilla on its own | under 1 g | 220 |
The apple adds 4.4 grams of fiber for 95 calories, nearly doubling a bottle of Slimfast. An ounce of almonds brings 3.5 grams along with 6 grams of protein.

A decision rule for choosing your shake
Use the number that matters most to you as the tiebreaker:
- If you want the most fiber in one serving, pick Garden of Life at 8 grams.
- If you want a grab and go bottle with low sugar, pick Slimfast Original or Equate at 5 grams.
- If you need a plant based bottle with low sodium, pick Kate Farms, but count its 18 grams of sugar.
- If a shake gives 3 grams or less, plan on an apple, a pear or a handful of nuts alongside it.
Whatever you choose, read the fiber line on the actual package. Formulas change, and these USDA records are snapshots from 2021 and 2022.

One thing to do with tomorrow’s shake
Set an apple or a small bag of almonds next to the bottle tonight. That one habit turns a 5 gram drink into a 9 gram meal, right on track for a 28 gram day.
If your fiber intake is low right now, Harvard advises increasing fiber gradually and drinking enough fluids. Add the side first, and try a higher fiber shake once that feels easy.
Meal replacement shakes and fiber: your questions
Which meal replacement shake has the most fiber?
Garden of Life Organic Meal Shake had the most in our comparison, with 8 grams per 36.5 gram scoop. That’s 29% of the Daily Value for 120 calories before liquid.
How much fiber does Slimfast have?
Slimfast Original Vanilla Cream gives 5 grams of fiber per 325 ml bottle, or 17% of the Daily Value. It also brings 20 grams of protein and 1 gram of sugar.
Does Ensure have fiber?
Ensure Original Vanilla has less than 1 gram of fiber per bottle. Ensure Original with Fiber gives 3 grams, along with 21 grams of added sugar.
Are weight loss shakes effective?
They can be. A 2019 review of 23 trials found that people on meal replacement diets lost about 1.44 kg more after one year than people on other diets.
How much fiber should a meal replacement shake have?
Aim for at least 5 grams, and pair it with a fruit or nuts to reach about 9 grams. That’s roughly one third of the 28 gram Daily Value.
Can meal substitutes replace every meal?
No. Mayo Clinic dietitian Anya Guy notes that not all meals should be replaced, and that shakes shouldn’t replace whole foods like fruits and vegetables.
Does Soylent have fiber?
Yes, but not much. A 414 ml bottle of Soylent Original gives 3 grams of fiber for 400 calories.
