Smoothie Mixes With Added Fiber: 7 Fiber Smoothie Mixes Compared

The best fiber smoothie mixes give 5 to 7 grams per serving, but plenty of popular powders give 1 gram or none at all. A packet of Kuli Kuli Dark Chocolate leads with 7 grams, while a classic strawberry mix gives 0.

A tub that says “smoothie mix” sounds like a shortcut to a fiber rich breakfast, yet the label often tells a different story. Among the fiber smoothie mixes we checked, the range ran from 7 grams per serving down to zero.

We pulled the label data for seven powders from USDA FoodData Central and lined them up against each other, and against the whole foods you’d blend in anyway. Here’s what each scoop really brings.

Seven fiber smoothie mixes side by side

These numbers are the labels each company submitted to USDA between 2018 and 2023. Formulas change, so treat a row as a snapshot and check the tub in front of you.

Smoothie mix (one serving)CaloriesFiber (% DV)ProteinSugarSodium
Kuli Kuli Organic Smoothie Mix, Dark Chocolate (37 g packet)1307 g (25%)17 gunder 1 g280 mg
Olly Probiotic Smoothie, Creamy Strawberry (44.6 g)1705 g (18%)18 g9 g290 mg
ZonePerfect Fruit and Greens Smoothie Powder (30.4 g)1105 g (18%)10 g9 g230 mg
Thinkthin High Protein Smoothie Mix (39 g)1405 g (18%)15 g8 g45 mg

Vega Protein Smoothie, Viva Vanilla (22 g)80under 1 g15 g2 g140 mg
Concord Foods Smoothie Mix, Strawberry (19 g)700 g0 g15 gnot listed

The FDA sets the Daily Value for fiber at 28 grams. A serving with 20% DV or more counts as high in a nutrient, so only Kuli Kuli clears that bar, while the three 5 gram mixes land close at 18%.

Notice that protein and fiber don’t travel together. Vega packs 15 grams of protein into its scoop but less than a gram of fiber, because it’s built almost entirely from protein isolates.

Where smoothie powder fiber actually comes from

Fiber in a mix arrives one of two ways. Some comes along with whole ingredients such as flax, chia, cocoa or dried fruit, and some is an isolated fiber added on purpose.

The FDA only lets companies count certain isolated fibers on the label. Its approved list includes guar gum (a thickener from the guar bean), psyllium husk, pectin and cellulose, and the agency has also accepted inulin and acacia gum.

Kuli Kuli uses guar gum alongside moringa leaf, pea protein and cocoa. Thinkthin adds chicory root fiber to chia and flax, and Olly lists both apple fiber and a cassava root prebiotic fiber.

Order matters on the ingredient list, which runs from most to least by weight. In Concord’s strawberry base, sugar and corn syrup solids come first, and the label shows 0 grams of fiber per serving.

Isolated fibers are not a trick. They still count, but they don’t bring the vitamins, minerals and plant compounds that come with a cup of fruit or a spoonful of seeds.

Each smoothie mix up close

Kuli Kuli Organic Smoothie Mix, Dark Chocolate

This single serve packet gives 7 grams of fiber and 17 grams of protein for 130 calories. Sweetness comes from stevia, so total sugar stays under 1 gram with none added.

Moringa, pea protein, cocoa and brown rice protein lead the ingredient list. Best for: the most fiber per scoop with almost no sugar. Drawback: 280 mg of sodium, about 12% of the Daily Value in one glass.

Olly Probiotic Smoothie, Creamy Strawberry

Olly brings 5 grams of fiber and 18 grams of protein, the most protein in our group. Pea protein, chlorella and flax join the apple fiber and cassava root fiber.

Drawback: at 170 calories it’s the heaviest scoop here, and cane sugar on the ingredient list helps bring total sugar to 9 grams.

ZonePerfect Fruit and Greens Smoothie Powder

For 110 calories, ZonePerfect gives 5 grams of fiber and 10 grams of soy protein. Apple powder and sugar both sit high on a list of 36 ingredients.

Best for: a lighter scoop when you plan to add fruit yourself. Drawback: 9 grams of sugar in a small 30 gram serving.

Thinkthin High Protein Smoothie Mix

Whey and sunflower protein deliver 15 grams of protein, while chicory root fiber, chia and flax deliver 5 grams of fiber. Dried strawberries and raspberries add flavor.

Best for: anyone watching salt, at just 45 mg of sodium, the lowest in the group. Drawback: 8 grams of sugar.

Navitas, Vega and Concord

Navitas is a tiny 5 gram scoop of hemp, cacao and maca with 1 gram of fiber, more of a booster than a base. You’d need several scoops before it moves your fiber total.

Vega is a protein shake in smoothie clothing, with under 1 gram of fiber. Concord Foods Strawberry, a sweet base built on sugar, corn syrup solids and nonfat dry milk, gives 0 grams of fiber and 15 grams of sugar per serving.

Torn between a smoothie mix, a protein powder and a plain fiber supplement? Our comparison charts line those options up by fiber, protein and sugar per scoop.

Fiber per 100 calories in each mix

Serving sizes range from 5 to 45 grams, so a per calorie view keeps the comparison fair:

  • Kuli Kuli Dark Chocolate: about 5.4 grams per 100 calories
  • Navitas Protein Smoothie Mix: about 5.0 grams, but in a 20 calorie scoop
  • ZonePerfect Fruit and Greens: about 4.5 grams
  • Thinkthin High Protein: about 3.6 grams
  • Olly Creamy Strawberry: about 2.9 grams
  • Vega Viva Vanilla: under 1.3 grams
  • Concord Strawberry: 0 grams

Kuli Kuli and ZonePerfect come out ahead. Olly falls toward the bottom of the fiber group simply because its scoop carries the most calories.

Blended drinks versus whole food add ins

A powder isn’t the only way to put fiber in your blender. USDA data shows a few everyday add ins match or beat a scoop of mix:

Add inCaloriesFiber
1 medium banana (118 g)1053.1 g
1 tablespoon chia seeds584.1 g
1 tablespoon ground flaxseed (7 g)371.9 g
1/4 cup rolled oats, dry (20 g)762.0 g
Kuli Kuli packet, for comparison (37 g)1307 g

Chia and flax together give 6 grams for under 100 calories, close to the best powder on our list. Harvard’s Nutrition Source names whole grains, legumes and nuts among the best fiber sources, and none of these add ins come with added sugar.

Mixes still win on protein and convenience. A packet with 17 grams of protein is hard to match with fruit and seeds alone.

The best of both is often a fiber mix plus one whole food. A ZonePerfect scoop with a tablespoon of ground flaxseed comes to about 6.9 grams of fiber for under 150 calories.

One glass, two ways

Picture a breakfast blend made with the Concord strawberry base and milk. The fiber total from the mix is 0 grams, with 15 grams of sugar before any fruit goes in.

Now swap in a Kuli Kuli packet, add a medium banana and a tablespoon of chia. That glass carries about 14.2 grams of fiber, roughly half the Daily Value, for around 290 calories before the liquid.

How to choose a fiber smoothie mix

Use this short checklist on any tub or packet before it goes in your cart:

  • Fiber of at least 5 grams per serving, ideally closer to 20% DV
  • Sugar under 10 grams per serving, with sugar not among the first ingredients
  • Protein that fits your goal, since mixes range from 0 to 18 grams
  • Sodium under about 300 mg if you drink one daily
  • A serving size you’ll actually use, not a 5 gram sprinkle

Only Kuli Kuli, Olly, ZonePerfect and Thinkthin pass the fiber line. Of those, Thinkthin is easiest on sodium, while Kuli Kuli is easiest on sugar.

Smoothie mixes, fiber supplements and your daily total

A smoothie mix with 5 grams covers about 18% of your day, while a plain fiber supplement such as psyllium husk or inulin adds isolated fiber with no protein at all. Both can help, but neither replaces beans, whole grains, fruit and vegetables across the rest of your meals.

Not sure how many grams you’re aiming for? Our fiber calculator works out a personal daily target in a few seconds.

One caveat before you switch mixes

Jumping from a 0 gram base to a 14 gram glass is a big change for your gut in a single morning. Harvard advises adding fiber gradually and drinking more fluids, so start with half a packet or skip the chia for the first week.

Give your digestion a week or two at each step before you add the next scoop. Once a full glass feels comfortable, it can become one of the easiest fiber wins of your day.

Fiber smoothie mixes: what people ask

Which smoothie mix has the most fiber?

Of the seven mixes we compared, Kuli Kuli Organic Smoothie Mix in Dark Chocolate had the most, with 7 grams per 37 gram packet. That’s 25% of the Daily Value for 130 calories.

Do smoothie powders count toward daily fiber?

Yes. Fiber listed on a smoothie powder label counts toward the FDA’s 28 gram Daily Value, including approved isolated fibers such as guar gum and inulin.

Is a fiber smoothie mix better than a fiber supplement?

It depends on what you want. A mix adds protein and flavor along with 5 to 7 grams of fiber, while a plain supplement gives isolated fiber like psyllium husk without the protein.

Do protein smoothie mixes have fiber?

Not always. Vega Protein Smoothie gives 15 grams of protein but under 1 gram of fiber per 22 gram scoop.

How much fiber should a smoothie have?

A smoothie with 6 grams or more covers over 20% of the 28 gram Daily Value. Adding a banana and a tablespoon of chia to a fiber mix can push one glass past 14 grams.

Can fiber smoothie mixes cause bloating?

They can if your usual diet is low in fiber. Harvard recommends increasing fiber gradually and drinking plenty of fluids to limit gas and bloating.

Is Vega Protein Smoothie high in fiber?

No. A 22 gram scoop of Viva Vanilla gives under 1 gram of fiber, so it works better as a protein base that you pair with fruit, oats or seeds.
